Pre-Primary (Toddler -18 Months Through 3 Years)
The Pre-Primary program builds child’s natural tendency towards independence and language development. Therefore, this environment is rich in language materials as well as opportunities to practice emerging social skills and independence.
Practical Life area is abundant in materials and activities that foster independence, increase concentration, refine motor skills and build self-esteem. In addition, they work on self-care and learn to wash their hands, put on their shoes and jackets. Grace and courtesy lessons are given at all times to encourage respectful treatment of their friends, teachers and the environment.
Under teacher’s careful guidance students can choose activities independently and have freedom of movement to explore. They are provided with ample time to complete what they start and at their own individual pace. The professional staff offers the tenderness, warmth, and patience so essential to this age.

Our daughter has been at the school since 6 months old. This is one of the few Montessori schools in the area that will take infants. We also loved the home like setting. Our family loves the International Montessori School of Wilmington. We have been sending our kids there since 2012. The staff is patient, loving and kind. I was so stressed about having to go back to work and finding a safe and loving place for my precious babies. IMS was/is a perfect fit for us. My two year old attends here and we love it! All of the staff know my daughter, my husband and me by name and they are genuinely interested in ensuring we all have the best experience possible there. My daughter’s vocabulary has blossomed since she has been there, and her sense of self and independence too. She even asks to prepare her own snacks, goes to the bathroom independently and operates in the Montessori way at home. My son is currently in his 5th year at the International Montessori School, and we are sad that he is already moving onto a new school next year. We could not be happier with the care and education he has received here. His teachers have all been very attentive and nurturing, and he does not hesitate to greet them with a hug every day. This is especially important to his dad and I as he spends several hours, including aftercare, at his school. We are so happy to see that he is comfortable and "at home" while at school and we have a tremendous amount of trust in the teachers and staff there. The Montessori curriculum has truly helped him to grow in his own unique way. I really like how the curriculum circles back on itself from one year to the next, allowing my son to get reintroduced to concepts that he has already learned. This gave him a "second chance" with some concepts that he was weak on the first time around OR master a concept he already had a good grasp on the previous year.
